long weekend at scout base
It was a slow start for the boys in cub scout troop 265. The hardest part was getting the lads to help the dads set up camp. We were crowded in an old cotton field that has been converted into a park of some sort deep in the delta of northern Mississippi. The news said there was 15,000 in attendance. Not too far were the lights of Tunica a low budget copy of Las Vegas. All the big casinos are down there. Back to the festivities at hand, after setting up the tents and the area for the 'kitchen" we headed for what we were hoping would be a day of fun and learning. This years theme was native American life,at least I think it was. There was circle dancing, rememberance dances, hoop dances. there was enough dances for many a life times.Plenty of arts and crafts, primative handycraft exhibits, and lots of scout stuff to buy.Even the Military had giveaways, the Air National Guard booth ran out of "swag" early.I guess the scouts know a good thing when they see one. No Coleman sales tent this year. The best show this year was the Navy Leap Frogs. The seal team knows how to jump out of planes. After all the fun we went back to camp for a good camp dinner. Spaghetti and meat balls. Nothing says camping like a plate of pasta. Later smores were devoured. This morning was clean-up and get out of Mississippi! Another Scout Base down, hopefully the next one will be as fun as this one. Remember if a scout trys to sell you popcorn,RUN, no help them out it is a great deal for you and the scouts...
